Position:	CL Account Underwriter

Overall Purpose and Main Objectives:	This position is accountable for identifying growth opportunities for high quality new business and renewal retention in the profitable expansion of Middlesex Mutual's book of Commercial business through a network of independent agents.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:	* Promotes achievement of Company business plan with regard to assigned agencies. This involves establishing and attaining growth, loss ratio, and quality targets and negotiating and monitoring Partnership Agreements and business plans with agencies. * Evaluates risk acceptability, pricing, and coverage of new business applications using underwriting judgment and objective data such as claims history, loss prevention criteria, and valuation tools. * Accepts, declines, or modifies endorsements changes to policies to ensure acceptable levels of risk. Reviews renewal policies within established Company guidelines using underwriting judgment and objective data such as claims history, loss control recommendation compliance, and payment history to ensure the continued acceptablility of coverage and rate adequacy. * Conducts agency visits to drive achievement of agency/company business plans, uncover training opportunities, prospect for individual risk and book consolidation opportunities, and identify areas of support such as: quoting and rating, business & marketing planning, acquisition facilitation, and customer retention strategies * Reports results of agency visits, business results, and competitive intelligence to senior management. Follows up on up unresolved issues and establishes objectives for future visits. * Conducts the training and development of agents and customer services staff through joint agency calls, sales meetings and industry trade activities. * Conducts the training and development of underwriter trainees and assistant underwriters though on the job training. * Contributes to new Commercial Lines product development and introductions. * Provides guidance and instruction to Assistant Underwriter and Underwriter Trainee to ensure timely production of a quality product to assigned agencies. * Participates in developmental activities such as monthly underwriting meetings, join agency calls, and insurance related courses/seminars. * Special projects as assigned by manager.
Required Knowledge and Experience:	* Bachelor's Degree or equivalent business experience * Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills * Some sales experience is very desirable * 1 - 3 years' of Commercial Lines underwriting experience * Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) * Excellent interpersonal skills * Advanced analytical skills * CPCU designation desirable
