Position: Temporary CL Habitational Underwriter

Overall Purpose and Main Objectives: This position is accountable for high quality new business, assessing the viability of renewals and renewal retention of commercial habitational business in assigned states and agencies in accordance with the company's objectives for growth, profitability, service and product quality.

Position will be for a long term temporary assignment for 12-18 months.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: * Evaluates the risk characteristics and loss potential of new and renewal business using objective data, judgment and loss prevention criteria in scope with granted underwriting authority. Accepts, declines, or modifies endorsements for changes to policies to ensure an acceptable level of risk. Re-underwrites a clients existing book of business based on a review of claims to establish risk profiles. Reviews claim data to ensure the continued acceptability of policies and the adequacy of rates.
* Promotes achievement of company business plan with regard to assigned states and/or agencies. This involves assisting in establishing/monitoring growth and quality targets.
* Conducts agency visits to provide training, promote client retention, and advance company products and programs. Reports results of agency visits, business results and competitive intelligence to manager.
* Participates in developmental activities such as monthly underwriting meetings, joint agency calls, and insurance related courses/seminars.
* Assists in training assistant underwriters. Gathers competitive intelligence data, provide suggested workflow efficiencies, and introduce new products. Troubleshoots problems and determines resolutions within the scope of authority.
* Strives to achieve and maintain established service standards:
o Renewals processed 2-5 days in advance.
o Loss controls, risk recommendations addressed within 60 days of effective day.
o Evaluate renewals 60 to 90 days in advance to allow for any action that may be warranted to be taken within the state law requirements.
Required Knowledge and Experience: * Thorough knowledge of the multi-family dwelling and apartment market
* Strong understanding of Habitational property ownership/management issues including:
o Tenant/landlord liability
o Lead paint, mold
o Tenant screening/selection
o Property/liability loss control
* 2 + Years of Commercial Lines property/casualty underwriting experience
* Possession of strong agency relationships
* Good written, oral communication and presentation skills
* Sound knowledge Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Good analytical underwriting skills with proven high quality results
* Bachelor's Degree or equivalent business experience
* CPCU designation desired
